Using Your Cabinets to Make the Kitchen Seem Larger

Your friends and family call your kitchen "quaint" or "cozy," but you just call it small. If you don't have the money for a full renovation, there are small changes you can make to your kitchen cabinets that can make your kitchen feel much bigger than it really is.

Here are a few ways you can use kitchen cabinets to make your small kitchen look and feel larger.

Choose Lighter Colors

White and other lighter colors reflect more light, including sunlight and the light emitted from your fixtures. Painting your cabinets white or a lighter color that works with your kitchen's overall look is an inexpensive option. However, if your cabinets are older or damaged or you simply want to update the look and feel of the room, consider having new cabinets professionally installed.

White cabinets are available in a variety of styles and options that work with any budget and tastes. If you don't like the look of stark white, consider an off-white or a lighter shade of your favorite color. Paint the kitchen walls the same color as the cabinets to make the room open up as well.

Install Glass Doors

Reflecting light and making the kitchen feel more open will give the illusion that the space is larger than it actually is. Switching out your existing cabinet doors for glass doors will also trick the eye into thinking there is more open space. If you don't like the look of clear glass, frosted glass can give you a similar impact without having everything in your cabinets exposed.

Take Advantage of Your Room's Height

Finally, one of the simplest ways to make a room seem bigger is to draw the eye upwards. Stack your cabinets to the ceiling or leave a small gap between the cabinet's top and the ceiling. Taking advantage of the vertical space will allow you to install more cabinets without cluttering the room with too many cabinets at eye level.

Another trick to help draw the eye upwards toward the ceiling is to place decorative items on the top of your cabinets.

Consider combining two or more tricks to maximize the space in your kitchen. For example, consider stacking the cabinets and installing glass doors or painting the cabinets white.

No matter the size of your kitchen, there are several simple things you can do with your cabinets that can make the kitchen appear larger than it actually is.

Pool House Parties: Building Your Backyard Escape

When I decided to turn my backyard into a pool and spa space, I wanted to have a pool house built. Adding a pool house would give me somewhere for everyone to shower and change without tracking pool water and dirt into the main house. I worked with a local contractor to construct a pool house with an outdoor kitchen, outdoor showers, and full indoor restroom facilities as well as a game room and changing rooms. I created this site to journal the process so that I could hopefully inspire others to do the same. I hope this site takes some of the mystery out of the construction process for you so you can build the backyard structure you've always wanted.
