3 Tips For Maintaining Your Asphalt Driveway

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you have an asphalt driveway, it's important that you maintain its condition to avoid unnecessary deterioration. While asphalt is durable, it will eventually wear down, especially if residues like oil, transmission fluid, tire residues, and even brake grease are allowed to build up on the surface. The chemicals within these residues, if allowed to accumulate over time, will mingle with the asphalt's contents and break them down.

However, if you follow these simple maintenance tips you can keep your asphalt driveway in good health.

Scrub Away Grime on a Regular Basis.

While cleaning your home on a regular basis means once per week or twice per month, cleaning your driveway on a regular basis means only about once per year, or maybe once every six months or so, depending on how heavy the traffic over your drive is. Even with light traffic, you will have grease and other chemical build up over time, and this is the stuff you don't want sitting on your asphalt.

You can easily soak down your driveway with your garden hose if you don't have a pressure washer, and apply a powdered laundry detergent to cover heavier stains and grease spots. Let this soak for a half hour to an hour, scrub with a heavy-duty push broom, and rinse away with a high pressure stream of water from your hose. You can additionally mix one part bleach to one part detergent to scrub out any tough set-in stains.

Seal Any Small Cracks with an Asphalt Crack Filler.

It happens from time to time; wind and rain start to break down your asphalt and eventually little cracks pop up here and there. These little cracks are quite easily repaired yourself. All you need for this maintenance job is an appropriate asphalt crack filler such as a cold liquid pour for cracks around a half inch in width or hot liquid pour for cracks bigger than an inch in width. Both are easy to apply and will work on most small to medium-sized fissures.

If you've got larger and harder-to-repair cracks and potholes starting to develop, it may be a good idea to contact a local asphalt paving service. The pros like those from Lakeridge Paving Company always have the best when it comes to commercial asphalt fillers, and they can help you get your driveway repaired quickly and with little to no fuss.

Always Use a Sealcoat for Your Asphalt.

Applying a sealcoat to your driveway will help protect it from water, oils, grease, and other staining residues that can deteriorate the materials in the asphalt. A coal tar asphalt sealer can be obtained from most hardware stores and applied easily with either a sprayer system or squeegee. It dries quickly within a few hours and will be one of the best methods of maintaining your asphalt driveway.

Following these maintenance steps to care for your driveway will keep your asphalt looking good as well as structurally sound.

Pool House Parties: Building Your Backyard Escape

When I decided to turn my backyard into a pool and spa space, I wanted to have a pool house built. Adding a pool house would give me somewhere for everyone to shower and change without tracking pool water and dirt into the main house. I worked with a local contractor to construct a pool house with an outdoor kitchen, outdoor showers, and full indoor restroom facilities as well as a game room and changing rooms. I created this site to journal the process so that I could hopefully inspire others to do the same. I hope this site takes some of the mystery out of the construction process for you so you can build the backyard structure you've always wanted.
